The architect approaches the design via two aspects: sustainability and innovation.

For the prior, corten steel is chosen to be the main material for its 100% recyclable and modular nature. Different counts of panels and tubes can be applied to various sizes of substations to achieve the scalability requirement. Traditionally, substations are manufactured in metal for its low maintenance and durability, and corten steel possesses all the good qualities with an extra layer of architectural aesthetics, which gives out a positive visual and bold expression. With the housing of equipment being the basic program, it has many more design features including solar energy harvesting, natural daylight interior, large canopy for pedestrian gathering as well 

as E-mobile charging stations. These extra features turn the secondary substation from a traditional utility space into a public amenity, and a beacon for sustainability and innovation.
